KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii Fire Department said that a man drowned on Monday in Ka’u.
Emergency responders arrived on scene around 4:30 p.m. after being notified of two swimmers in distress at South Point Landing. Once there, rescue personnel discovered a woman in her 20s had made it to shore, suffering minor scrapes, however, visual contact with the male swimmer had been lost.
A Good Samaritan on a boat was able to assist with the location of the victim. C-1 and HFD Rescue personnel located, then free dived to recover the victim, who was described as a male in he 20. His body was found in about 50 feet of water.
Also Monday, HFD called off the search for a woman swept away Jan. 26 at Piihonua Falls in Hilo, pending new developments. Aerial surveys and ground and dive searches on Sunday and Monday, turned up no sign of the woman.
